Is Trustpilot legit?

How can you spot Trustpilot fake reviews?
That and everything else you need to know in this honest Trustpilot review.
What Is Trustpilot About?
Founded in 2007 by Peter Holten Mühlmann, Trustpilot is a review website for consumers to write their reviews on various businesses. There are around one million reviews added to the said site every month.
In case you’re not familiar with it, it’s like Yelp or the Better Business Bureau (BBB) where we can leave comments about a comment.
The goal of its founder, Mühlmann, is to provide the most transparent way for consumers to give their feedback. Through this, companies can see and respond to concerns and compliments about them.
The site is mostly free for everyone, especially for consumers; however, businesses can choose to opt for the paid options for more features.
Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, the brand has offices all over Berlin, Melbourn, London, New York, and Denver and has over 800 employees.
In December 2020, Trustpilot gathered more than 120 million reviews and obtained an estimated amount of $119 million for its annual recurring revenue.
How Trustpilot Works?
When checking a business rating and review, you can simply go to its website without creating an account.
However, if you want to leave ratings and feedback as a consumer, you can easily create a free account. Companies can do the same without any fee as well.
While consumers are free to create an account and leave reviews on businesses, Trustpilot has set specific guidelines to know who’s eligible to provide feedback or not.
Part of this means ticking a box that confirms that it’s the reviewer’s personal genuine experience. It will also ask the consumer to enter their email address for verification.
To leave a comment or look for reviews, all you have to do is visit their homepage first and type the name of the company or category. You can also click “browse companies by category” below the search bar.
In the screenshot below, I clicked on the Furniture Store.
I chose the first company, VeryApt. You can see its rating, which is 5 out of 5 stars, and the reviews from its consumers.
You can also see “Write A Review” if you want to leave feedback. By doing so, you’ll be asked to click the stars or rating, share feedback, and confirm that it’s based on your own experience. To continue, you can enter your email address or sign in using your Facebook or Google account.
Under the rating and Write A Review option, you can see how many of the reviews are Excellent, Great, Average, Poor, and Bad.
On the right side, you can click on “See A Detailed Overview.”
As mentioned on their website, “This page gives you a detailed overview of how VeryApt has used Trustpilot over the past 12 months. Find out where their reviews come from, how their star ratings differ per source, how many reviews they flag, and whether those flagged reviews actually breach our guidelines.”
Through this, you’ll know whether the review is unsolicited or organic; meaning, it’s the consumer’s choice to provide feedback. You can also see if it’s a manual invitation sent by a company to its customers.
This also allows you to see whether the company is responding to comments or not and how frequent it is.
As mentioned, companies can respond to the reviews left by the consumers and as part of being transparent, Trustpilot can let you see if a review has been removed or reported for violating the Trustpilot’s Guidelines.
Other than these, the company also relies on a compliance team and software as well as its users to remove or report suspicious reviews.
So far, the approaches made by Trustpilot do provide a sense of confidence for users who are looking for the positive feedback.
Some people are not easy to please, thinking that there might be a chance for companies to pay to add positive reviews and remove negative ones to create a good impression but thanks to Trustpilot’s transparency, the doubts are reduced, if not eliminated.
How Does Trustpilot Works For Businesses?
For businesses, Trustpilot is a bit different. You can either create a business account for free or check your company’s ratings and reviews.
The free account lets the companies respond to its consumers as well as send manual review invitations to customers and claim their profile page.
That being said, I don’t see any excuse for businesses not to respond to their customers' feedback. Otherwise, it says something about what kind of company they are.
I mean, if you’re genuinely concerned about your brand and your consumers, I believe it’s just fair if you will spend time answering their reviews, whether it’s good or not.
It also lets your brand interact with your customers while growing your credibility and online presence.
Meanwhile, if you opt for the paid membership account, which is around $199 a month, you have access to advanced features, such as 500 automated review invitation emails, and ad-free company profile page, etc.

Is Trustpilot A Scam?
Based on how it works, the brand is true to its goal of being transparent. It’s a legit platform for consumers to share their experiences and companies to respond. It’s one of the most trusted websites that help people know whether a company is worth their time and money or not.
For over 13 years and more than 100 million reviews, it only shows that Trustpilot is not a scam.
However, while Trustpilot definitely helps in determining whether a brand is legit or not or a good company or otherwise, it should not be the sole resource.
I mean, I’ll use Target.Com as an example. It has over 2,000 reviews on Trustpilot with a 2.2 rating. Most feedback is bad but still, Target is a well-known and trusted brand.
Despite the negative reviews overweighting the positive ones, we can’t say that Target is a scam nor a bad website.
Meanwhile, if you check target.com on BBB, it also has tons of complaints but it has an A+ rating.
The point is, while Trustpilot is legitimate and can be a great tool to know more about a certain company, it won’t hurt if you will look for more reviews or experience the brand itself (as long as it won’t put you, your safety, and/or your money at risk).
In my experience, I find Trustpilot helpful, especially in validating resources; however, I keep in mind that there will always be complaints against a company despite its legitimacy, length of operation, or size.
So the best thing to do is use this kind of platform for support and do a further background search, especially when the company that I’m checking offers an opportunity to make money. This way, I can avoid being scammed.
How To Check Fake Reviews Online?
While Trustpilot fake reviews are reported and removed as much as possible, seeing unreputable reviews are inevitable.
After all, the verification process done by the site is less complicated so more or less, there’s a chance for fake reviews to be entered on the website.
There are a few tips that might come in handy if you want to avoid unreliable feedback online.
Tip #1: Look At The Review Itself
If the grammar is almost perfect or too poor, there’s a chance that the review is fake.
Some companies are out to look and pay for people who can put fake reviews to make their brand look good online. Personally, I’ve experienced writing paid short reviews on Amazon and that was when I didn’t know the value and importance of feedback.
Now, if ever I encounter such a thing again, I’d turn it down knowing that I might have contributed to a buyer’s wrong decision.
It also pays to check the format of the review. Some fake reviews use the same words; some would even just copy the previous reviews but using another name. Now that’s easier to spot!
Tons Of Positive Reviews
This is especially when the reviews are posted in a short period. Chances are, the company has hired someone to post fake positive reviews as much as possible for the sake of their brand.

Pros/Cons
PROS
Legitimate Company
Without a doubt, the brand is legitimate and is true to its purpose -- to provide transparency. It offers reviews from various customers and has implemented ways and guidelines to remove and report fake feedback.
Convenient And Easy-To-Use
The website is well-designed and easy to navigate. The search bar has been provided and you have the option to filter a company or category based on several factors, such as the zip code, number of reviews, period, and company status.
CONS
Fake Reviews
While Trustpilot is strict on its guidelines, there’s still a chance for fake reviews to be posted on their website. Again, the verification process is pretty easy.
But then again, such a thing is inevitable so as long as Trustpilot is putting effort into eliminating unreliable feedback, it would also help if you will learn how to spot one.
