As the name suggests, this MLM company promotes scented products, such as oils, diffusers, and even scented blankets. It was founded in 2004 by Kara Egan and Colette Gunnell, her sister-in-law.

The idea began in 2003 when Kara was watching “Millionaire’s Mom” by Oprah. The show inspired her to create scented products that are safe and simple. Her first product is an electric candle warmer -- an alternative to traditional candles. After several years, the business expanded and has developed new products, such as Scentsy Diffuser and Scentsy Go.

Scentsy Product Line

As of now, Scentsy is not limited to electric candles and diffusers. The company has more than 20 products to choose from, including wax fragrances, room sprays, scents in travel tins, dish soap, skin and body essentials, pet sprays and shampoos, and a lot more.

What Makes Scentsy Different?

From what I see, there’s not much difference between Scentsy and other MLM products, such as Young Living and doTERRA. Their products focus on fragrance and they are tasked to invite more people to earn commissions. However, instead of just selling the products online and in person, you can host a party with the help of their consultant (distributors) and get a reward, such as free products and discounted offers.

When hosting a party, all you have to do is contact a Scentsy Consultant, decide whether you want to host at home, in a nearby coffee shop, or even online, and invite friends. The consultant will take care of the small talk and product samples and once it’s done, they will tally the orders and help you obtain your Host Rewards.

In case you’ve decided to become a consultant and not just a host, you can ask a Scentsy Consultant to assist you.

Can You Make Money With Scentsy?

I’m not a fan of MLMs, to begin with, but when you attend any of their talks or meeting, you’ll realize that there are many opportunities to earn. The challenge, however, is selling the product itself and inviting new people -- and I’ll discuss more of this in a bit.

Anyway, as for Scentsy, you can earn 20% commission from direct sales alone and you can earn more bonuses and incentives depending on the sales of your team. Like other MLM companies, your earnings rely not only on the personal and team sales you make but also to your rank. 

Sounds promising, right? However, I found out a deal-breaker about this program. For you to earn a commission from inviting new people, you need to have at least $500 worth of sales plus $1,000 combined sales of your team. While the idea is to keep you and your downline active, I don’t think it’s fair since most people who join MLM companies do not really stay for a long time.

Going back to MLM practices; normally, they sell products on a very expensive amount. If you’re a distributor, this is challenging because it’s easy to find similar products online -- let’s say Amazon -- on a cheaper price. Also, inviting friends and families to join the program is difficult. Since most people are not comfortable with shelling out a huge amount for a membership fee and the products, convincing them would not be easy.

In case you’ve successfully invited new people, there’s a chance that you’ll end up a good relationship. Your downline might expect a lot from you and the platform and if the expectations are not met, they might blame you.

How Will Scentsy Pay You?

Every 10th of the month, Scentsy will mail your paycheck. But, here’s another deal-breaker, you need to have at least $30 on your account or you’ll have to wait until the next month before they pay you. 

Scentsy Reviews 

Scentsy has been in the industry for more than 10 years and an MLM business, that’s almost equal to a hundred years. Network marketing almost sounds like a pyramid scheme and for this reason, some companies shut down eventually.

Considering this, Scentsy must really be a good business since they can operate for a long time. Anyway, I browsed online for Scentsy reviews and based on what I saw, there is more negative feedback than positive reviews, and I’ll share some of it below.

Some people think that MLM companies and pyramid schemes are the same but no, these are two different things. For one, network marketing sells tangible products while a pyramid does not promote physical products. Second, MLMs compensate people for having a team that achieves a target/quota; pyramid scams pay you for just inviting new people.

Is Scentsy A Pyramid Scheme 

Scentsy is not a scam. It’s 100% legit and unlike other MLM programs I’ve reviewed in the past, it’s not involved in any alarming issues. There are a few complaints though and if you are not ready to risk a lot of cash for a business, you really have to think this through.

Can you invite new people to join the program?

Are you ready to host parties and sell overpriced products?

How good are you at encouraging your team to reach your target sales?

If you’re up for the challenge, then I salute you! Only a few people are willing to join such programs.

The regular membership fee for Scentsy is $99 and this does NOT include the shipping and handling fee. It comes with a Starter Kit consists of order forms, 80 party size scent testers, a warmer, a scent bar, and business cards. Basically, the basic things you need to start a business. Also, they’ll provide a website that’s free for three months. After that, you have to pay $10 every month.

Apart from the membership fee, you need to order products worth $150 every quarter to keep your account active. This is not surprising at all since most MLM companies will require you to purchase a certain amount so they will not terminate your account.

On their website, it says that they offer $15 for their membership since they are celebrating their 15th anniversary. If you want to become a Scentsy Consultant, you should take advantage of this offer.

Legit MLM Company

As mentioned, Scentsy is legit and it has not involved itself in any alarming issues. I’ve encountered legitimate MLM programs before but they shut down eventually because of their unethical practices so it’s good to know that Scentsy is not one of them.

CONS

Low Income Potential

This is one sad truth about MLM companies. While there are distributors that get rich, some members cannot even get their investment back because of the struggles that come along with this kind of business.

Minimum Threshold To Earn From Referrals

To earn a commission from the people you asked to join, you need to earn $500 worth of personal sales and $1,000 combined team sales first. No need to explain ‘cause we all know that this one’s already a drawback.

If you like fragrances yourself and you’re willing to take the challenge as a distributor, then you can consider Scentsy. I can’t recommend it personally though because, for me, MLMs will require a lot of effort and time to make it work. Sadly, you cannot expect good results from it even if you think you’ve done everything.

Scentsy is a good MLM company that you can consider only if you really want to promote scented products. While the company’s legit, making an MLM business work is not easy. I know it’s normal to struggle when you have a business but it’s a lot more difficult when you want to make money with MLM.
