The question is: is it worth your effort and time?

Transcription is a legit business model but before you sign up, it’s worth knowing the company behind it first.

In this post, we’ll talk about a transcription opportunity called Rev.com. We will discuss everything you need to know to help you come up with an informative decision so sit back, relax, and read the entire review.

What Is Rev.com About?

Rev.com is an American speech-to-text company that provides clear and accurate transcriptions, high-quality captions, and subtitles for all audio and video types as they claim.

So, it renders services to companies that need transcription, captioning, and translation services. Let's say, for example, a company recorded audio of a meeting and they want it to be transcribed. So, instead of doing it on their own, they would hire someone from the Rev.com platform and that transcriber will transcribe the words for them.

Same as with the video captioning and translation.

They’ll hire someone to do the work for them. Rev.com also stands as a means for these transcribers to earn money by rendering transcriptions, captions, and subtitles.

Transcribers are freelancers that work from home and they are also located in different countries of the world. The company also claims on its website that it is trusted by over 170,000 customers across all industries.

It’s almost the same as Scribie, Transcribe Anywhere, and Tigerfish Transcription.

Rev.com was founded in 2010 and is headquartered in Austin, Texas, and San Francisco, California USA. It was founded by Odesk employees including Jason Chicola who now is the company’s CEO.

Chicola earned his BS degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Early in his career, Chicola was a business analyst at McKinsey & Co.

Before starting Rev.com, Jason Chicola was the 3rd employee at oDesk (a well-known freelancer marketplace). He was also an investment professional with H.I.G. Capital and an associate with Globespan Capital Partners.

Other people behind Rev.com’s beginning were other early Odesk employees Dan Kokotov, David Abrameto, Josh Breinlinger, Mark Chen, and Paul Huck.

Is Rev.com A Scam?

Rev.com is not a scam.

It’s been operating for more than a decade.

It's a legit company that provides transcription services and also offers a legit money-making opportunity for freelancers who aspire to be a transcriptionist or captioner.

However, earning a few dollars for long hours spent transcribing a single audio file, I believe it’s not worth your time and effort.

Rev.com Compensation Plan

Making money in Rev.com’s online opportunity is basically through transcribing, captioning, and translating or making subtitles for all audio and video types.

As a transcriptionist in Rev.com, the range of pay is set between $0.24 and $0.90 for each audio or video minute.

According to its website, the average monthly earning is about $245 and it will be dependent on the transcriptionist. As some of their best transcriptionists can even earn up to $1,495 monthly.

While being a Captioner, the pay you can expect to receive is anywhere between $0.45 and $0.75 per audio or video minute that they have captioned. The average income monthly is set at $240 but the top performers can earn up to $1,570 monthly.

As for your remuneration, you can cash out your earnings through PayPal and it’s given weekly.

How Much To Join Rev.com?

There’s no required fee for joining Rev.com’s employment opportunity.

Yes, it’s one of those online job opportunities that is totally free in joining. However, there are of course requirements that one should have to be accepted as a freelance transcriptionist or captioner in Rev.com.

One is that you should be fluent in the English language and have good hearing (for audio file transcriptions). You should also have your own PC or laptop and of course, since it is online, you should have a reliable internet connection.

Rev.com doesn't necessarily require transcriptionists and captioners to have prior experience or any other qualifications to be accepted and there are no age requirements.

So, if you have good hearing acuity and strong English language skills, you're good to go for this opportunity.

Pros/Cons

PROS

Free And Legit

As always, it’s great to find an opportunity that is free joining and you can even gain income from it. Not only that it’s free but it’s also legit and it pays. Well, it’s nice to gain a little something in your spare time.

You Can Have Your Liberty Of Time And Place

One of the great things about being in a freelance job is that you can have flexibility. You have the liberty of controlling your time, unlike other full-time jobs that would require you to do 8-5 office work.

It’s also nice that you can work at home while also having time with your family or doing other errands.

You can also work anytime, anywhere at your convenience.

And with Rev.com’s opportunity, you can work wherever you are in the world as long as you have a computer and a stable internet connection.

You can even work while you travel.

Convenient Pay

It’s also nice that Rev.com offers a convenient pay through PayPal, which is accessible for many people even in countries in Asia, South America, or Eastern Europe.

Rev.com pays out its contractors every week, unlike full-time jobs that would give you your salary monthly or half the month. So having a pay weekly is a great deal for freelancers who desperately need extra cash as soon as possible.

CONS

Poor Audio Quality Times

There are instances that the audio provided by some clients is of poor quality. Well, they might be unaware or maybe they just don't care.

If someone is speaking unclearly, muffled, or garbled, it would definitely be hard for the transcriptionist to transcribe.

Transcriptionists will spend a lot of time trying to figure out what was being said on the audio file, and since you're paid by the job and not by the hour spent on the job, you’ll be at a disadvantage.

Complicated Application Process

The qualifications may seem simple for some but apparently, the application process in Rev.com is not that easy. Let’s take for instance as a captioner, first you’ll have to take a grammar test and pass it.

Well, other than that, you should also pass their style guide, dash editor, and captioning sample tests.

In my opinion, it’s quite a tedious process for a job that doesn’t pay a lot.

Negative Feedback From Freelancers

Well, there are of course positive feedbacks from satisfied Rev.com freelancers but there are also negative ones.

Other than the low pay discussed above, one common complaint is that the grading system is unfair and unreasonable. This is in terms of the grading for the skills test including the hearing acuity.

Limited Income Potential

Rev.com is legit and it pays. However, their pay is really low. One of the common complaints from freelancers is that they only earn a little for several hours of work.

It’s only good as a spare time opportunity if you would want to have some extra cash but if you want a substantial income, it’s way far off. Sign up for this alternative instead.

Who Is It For?

Rev.com’s online opportunity is best suited for those working from home and for freelancers. You should also have strong English skills which of course require grammar sufficiency and that you should also have good hearing acuity.

Guess, this best suits English Majors out there but then again, it’s just good as a side gig and not for a full-time source of substantial income.

Training Tools/Support

Rev.com provides orientation and tutorials to help those who are new to get started. Their website is packed with FAQs and there is a resource library, which includes How-to articles, guides, and tutorials.

They also have webinars. For support, they have a Help Center.

Final Opinion/Verdict

Rev.com is not a scam. It’s even operating for more than a decade to be considered a scam. It’s definitely a legit online income opportunity and it pays.

It’s great to join an income opportunity that is for free and you could as well put into practice your English grammar skills here and as well as exercise your hearing acuity. However, the income potential is low.

So, if you’re looking for a full-time source of substantial income, it’s not the best opportunity out there.

It could be a side gig or an opportunity for extra cash but that’s just it! So, if you’re finding an income opportunity that would reward you with lucrative income, this is definitely not the opportunity for you. There are definitely way better ones!
