One of the brands that offer a multi-level marketing (MLM) opportunity is the Motives Cosmetics -- a company founded in 1997.

With more than 20 years of operation, should you trust this brand? Is Motives Cosmetics a scam? What are its pros and cons?

Find out everything you need to know in this Motives Cosmetics review.

What Is Motives Cosmetics About?

Motives Cosmetics, as the name implies, is a network marketing company that is under the beauty niche. It was founded in 1997 by Loren Ridinger -- a “serial entrepreneur, social media guru, internet marketing leader, and beauty fashion expert,” or so her LinkedIn account says.

Before Motives Cosmetics, Loren has been involved in other MLM companies, such as Market America and Shop.Com, which is also a domain of Market America. Both of these brands are legit but have been involved with controversies, such as being a pyramid scheme.

But does that mean the brand has some suspicious practices, too? Let’s answer that in a bit but for now, let’s find out more about the company.

Originally from the United States, Motives Cosmetics is also available in several countries, including Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.

Jennifer Lopez, and the Kardashians, especially Kim were present in some of their publicity campaigns. Now, while this might sound exciting for some, you should know that their products, as well as the opportunity offered, are not unique. Other MLM brands are promoting the same essentials, too, such as:

How To Make Money With Motives Cosmetics?

Since it follows an MLM structure, Motives Cosmetics provides two ways to make money online: selling and recruiting.

To qualify for the sales commission, you have to become a member first so you can have access to their wholesale price. This lets you market the product based on the suggested retail price and earn a 30% commission.

I don’t think this is bad enough since most of their products start from $27. The downside, however, is that there are cheaper alternatives but unless you prove that your product’s worth its price, I don’t think that should be a problem.

Now the recruitment part. As a network marketing company, you have to grow your network and that means inviting people to join the platform. Having a downline or a bigger team lets you earn more commissions, bonuses, and incentives.

The problem with Motives Cosmetics, however, is that they don’t provide the public any details about their compensation plan. This is a big no-no because first of all, how would the aspiring distributors trust you if they don’t know what and how much they are expecting.

But so much for that, you can watch the video below to learn more about Motives Cosmetics and its compensation plan:

Is Motives Cosmetics A Scam?

Motives Cosmetics appears to be a legit MLM company. It’s accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) under Market America.

However, if you’re asking if the brand itself is accredited, it’s not. It doesn’t have a record with BBB.

Actually, the brand rarely shares itself. It doesn’t even provide the ingredients of their makeup, its compensation plan, and Income Disclosure Statement so we’ll never know much about the opportunity offered unless we talk to the beauty advisors or distributors directly.

There’s no indication whether their products are approved by FDA, cGMP certified, or cruelty-free.

Also, if you check its parent company, Market America, you might be disappointed to know the controversies they’ve been involved with. For one, the federal lawsuits filed charging the founders for the illegal sales.

Another lawsuit suggests that the company is operating an illegal pyramid operation. On top of this, some of Market America’s distributors complained about not receiving their profits.

Considering this, do you still think Motives Cosmetics is a good brand to join with knowing that it was founded by the same co-founder of Market America?

While this brand is not a scam, it might be wise to think twice or ignore this platform instead. After all, there are other legit programs to choose from and you can use my FREE Step-By-Step Guide to learn how you can make money online.

Price

As mentioned, you have to become a member first before you can start earning with Motives Cosmetics, and there are two options to choose from.

The first one is to purchase the $149 Subscription Kit.

It comes with various cosmetics, catalogs, samples, and order forms. The price is fairly affordable and compared to other MLM brands, this is more advantageous since you can sell these products already. For others, this amount is only for the membership fee or sample-sized products.

The other option is the Motives Fast Start Kit, which costs $399.

It offers a variety of products that the beauty advisor can use for hosting or house parties -- a type of event that most MLM brands use to showcase their products. It also includes order forms, catalogs, and samples.

Pros/Cons

PROS

Focused On The Product

Despite the criticisms on its parent company, Motives Cosmetics relies on product selling rather than the recruitment part, which for me, is better since they are offering a business opportunity.

The products look appealing and high quality and although the price is more expensive compared to the ones sold in the market, there’s a good chance that you will be able to sell it since most makeup enthusiasts rely on the quality of the product.

Legit Company Backed Up By Market America

Despite the lawsuits against Market America, it has already made a name in the industry and many people still trust it. This gives a solid foundation for Motives Cosmetics, too.

CONS

Bad Reputation Of Parent Company

Market America has been tagged as a pyramid scheme and has been known for its illegal sales. Also, some distributors complained about not receiving their hard-earned cash and considering that they also own Motives Cosmetics, it would be hard for me to trust the brand.

Also, since it’s easy to find the details you need online, it might be hard for you as a distributor to grow your team because of these issues.

Not Transparent

No product ingredients. No Income Statement Disclosure. No compensation plan.

This leads me to one question: are they hiding something from the public?

If not, why are they not transparent with these things? Their Income Disclosure Statement, for instance, is important since it shows how much their distributors actually earn every year or month.

Who Is It For?

Motives Cosmetics, being a cosmetic brand, is ideal for anyone who loves makeup. If you know how to use it and you use it almost all the time, you can take advantage of your passion and turn it into profit.

It’s also ideal for anyone who has joined a network marketing before since you already know how the system works.

Final Opinion/Verdict

Motives Cosmetics is a legit company backed up by another legitimate MLM brand, Market America. Its parent company has faced many controversies although the brand itself has none. It has no complaints so far but unfortunately, it barely shares anything about it other than the founders and their story.

The products are high-quality and have been endorsed by well-known people, thus giving them leverage over new brands. However, as an MLM opportunity, you should know that it’s not just about selling the products, you also have to recruit people to earn more bonuses and commissions.
